School girl learning at home Due to COVID-19, this year’s back-to-school season may look different. A lot of schools have adopted a hybrid solution to learning, where days are split between virtual and in-person. However, some parents are opting to continue schooling their kids at home only.

Whichever method you choose, there are a few essential items needed for virtual learning to be successful. Carrier Academy of Learning has some suggestions for you!

Designated Learning Space

It’s important to dedicate a specific area of your home to schooling. This will help remind your children that, while in this place, it’s time to learn and stay focused!

Adding some books, flowers or other colorful décor items can lighten up the area and make it a more enjoyable, fun place to learn. An educational space can also help promote the creativity and motivation you would normally find in school classrooms.

Necessary Electronic Accessories

Virtual learning means you will be using a variety of electronic devices to study, access online resources and communicate with teachers. Make sure you have enough outlets to charge all devices that may be in use.

You may also need to purchase extension cords or charging hubs for more room and to make it easier to power up. Having extra screen cleaners may come in handy if multiple kids are using the same devices or they’re shared with the rest of the household.

Virtual Recess & Play Dates

One of the biggest downsides of virtual learning is the lack of in-person communication and interaction. Use the technology to your advantage, setting up video play dates or study sessions with other kids, so they can communicate like they would in a school setting.

Schedule Breaks

Virtual learning means increased technology and screen time. Schedule breaks throughout the day for the kids to read a book, play a game or get away from technology altogether.

Limit screen time after school, instead suggesting puzzles or playtime outside. Maintaining a typical school year routine during the week is important to remind kids they’re not on an extended summer vacation!
